What is design?

Design is a wide field, with many types and niches. From logos to posters, from visual identities to branding. In this section we will explore what design is, the different types of design.

First you need know the Design is the process of intentionally arranging things or their parts in a way that affects their aesthetic appeal or usability.

The word “design” is applied broadly in human society—in fields as disparate as architecture, clothing, film, furniture making and graphic design—to refer to everything from how something looks (e.g., “a bluejay’s feather pattern”) to how it works (e.g., “the architecture of a building”).

What is Graphic Design?

Graphic design is a form of art that uses visual elements, such as images and type, to communicate a message. Graphic designers often use software to create layouts for print or digital advertising. Graphic design may include the use of typography, illustrations, or other image-making techniques to create a visual representation of ideas and messages

Some other graphic design fields include web design and multimedia which are more computer-based, while print work is still an industry powerhouse.

In general, graphic design is all about delivering your message in the most artistic way possible. There’s a lot more to it than just putting together text and images – mood boards are an integral part of designing any project. The first step in designing anything is figuring out what you’re trying to say and how you want it to sound.

What is Graphic designers?

Graphic designers are skilled in areas that include drawing, photography, illustration, animation, light and color theory.

Designers may be self-employed, employed by a graphic design company or organization such as a newspaper or publishing company. In the past, graphic designers’ work was typically published as art (such as books). However today they generally publish their designs on posters, brochures and other print media to promote themselves or their organizations.

Designers use their creativity with both the tangible like pencils and paper or the intangible like computers to create something for a client. They need to be able to see the big picture as well as all of the small details in order to make what is in their minds eye come alive.

The 8 fundamental types of graphic design:

Graphic design is one of the most versatile fields that you can get into. You can branch out and specialize in a specific niche, or you can choose to be a generalist.

1- branding graphic design:

It is important to have a strong visual identity in order to distinguish your brand from the competition.

The visual identity of a brand is the infrastructure that provides the framework for all of its communication on everything from its logo and product packaging to its advertising and marketing collateral. A strong identity also helps differentiate your company from the competition.

A strong visual identity often starts with a logo or symbol, which identifies a company’s name, mission, or values, and becomes an easily recognized marker of their brand.

2- Publication graphic design

The graphic design in publication plays an important role in promoting the content and influencing its perception. It can either make or break the reading experience.

In this age of digital media, more organizations rely on digital magazines, blogs, and emails to communicate with their audiences. Digital magazines, blogs and emails are all meant for digital distribution.

Publication graphic designers work with both print-ready artwork as well as digital images and typography for the web and social media sites that accompany it.

A publisher’s intended look should be translated by the designer through layouts and typography to create compelling designs that balance intellectual requirements with commercial demands to produce illustrations of products or services that stimulate a particular response from readership while also reinforcing overall brand values.

3- illustration graphic design

Illustration is a form of graphic design that employs imaginative, visual representations instead of words to present information. Visual representation can come in the form of drawings, paintings, photography, or other media such as interactive animations.

Illustration graphic design is the illustration process where pictures and graphics are added to designs with the purpose of creating more interest or producing better aesthetic appeal.

The use cases for illustration graphic design can be seen when it comes to logos, flyers, brochures, websites, posters etc.

4- UI/ User interface graphic design

UI/ User interface design is a process of designing the way in which an application, website or other product presents or draws user input and then responds.

The UI is a crucial part of an application as it decides how users interact with the app and what happens to them.

A well-designed UI will make it easier for users to understand how your app works and provide a better experience.

UI design has been around for decades, but it’s been rapidly evolving over time. It undergone many changes, from skeuomorphic design to flat design and now adaptive layout design with mobile screens in mind.

Also Though most people think of computer screens when they hear the term “user interface,” some interfaces involve printed materials or environments such as point of sale systems and ATM machines.

5-Advertisement Graphic Design

Advertising graphic design is the use of visual and textual design in marketing, advertising and other forms of communication.

The goal of the role is to create an image or message that will elicit a response from the consumer. The ad designer’s job is to attract attention, highlight benefits, and encourage action.

Advertising graphics can be visual representations of objects and people or abstract symbols that represent ideas and concepts in order to elicit a behavioural response from people. Advertising graphics play an important role in advertising campaigns because they are able to capture attention quickly.

6-Product Packaging Designs

Packaging design is the process of designing the containers that items are shipped in, or containers that are used to store a wide variety of items. Packaging design is one of the most important aspects of marketing for a business, because it’s how the product is presented to consumers.

The two types of graphic design packaging are commercial and industrial. Commercial packaging typically contains products such as milk, orange juice, and soda. Industrial packaging usually contains products such as machinery and electronics. Packaging design in China first began with paper bag designs in the 1960s and later with cardboard boxes from Hong Kong in 1974.
Graphic design has been studied by psychologists such as Edward Miller and Rudolf Arnheim who have described it as “the art of giving information”. For example, when someone sees a hamburger on a menu, it may trigger their appetite or make them crave for food.

7- Environmental graphic design

Environmental graphic design is a branch of graphic design which uses the environment as the basis for both inspiration and execution.

This topic relates to the basic principles of Environmental Graphic Design which is the study and practice of using natural landscapes, weather, and architecture as inspiration for design. Environmental Graphic Design is a branch of graphic design which uses the environment as the basis for both inspiration and execution. EGD can be understood in terms of environmental perception because it reveals how an object or environment affects our senses through sight, sound, smell, touch, or taste.

8-Animation or Video Graphics

Graphic designers create not only static designs, but also dynamic ones. Motion graphic designers create graphic elements that can move on the screen and communicate an idea or message to the viewer. This type of design is very popular in video and film editing because it helps make video more interesting and engaging for viewers.

Motion graphics are created with animation software, such as Adobe After Effects or Autodesk Maya, that can generate frames that can be seamlessly put together to produce a motion sequence. This form of design has been growing in recent years as technology has advanced and creatives have found new ways to push the boundaries of what types of effects they can create.

Unsure of which path to take?

The best niche graphic design is a graphic design that is targeted to a specific market or audience.

Some designers don’t like designing for a niche market because it limits their creativity and makes the design process more difficult. However, designing for a niche can be the most lucrative way designers can make money.

When you are designing for a niche market, you are forced to think about what people from that market want and need so that you can provide them with what they want and need.
